Fort Saskatchewan is located approximately 25 km north east of Edmonton, along North Saskatchewan River. It was first established as a fort in 1875, a town 1904, and a city in 1985. Fort Saskatchewan, which population has reached over 20,000 by 2012, is well known for its close proximity to Dow Chemical, Sherritt International, Agrium, and Shell Canada. Some of the main attractions of this newer city are: Down Centennial Centre, which included an ice arena, gym, fitness centre, and indoor track, Jubilee Recreation Centre, Sportsplex, Harbour Pool, and Fort Saskatchewan Golf & Curling Club situated just north west of highway 21. Fort Saskatchewan Public Library can be found next to City Hall. Fort Saskatchewan real estate is generally slightly less expensive than Edmonton, depending on the neighbourhood and style of homes. Some of these properties date back to 1910s and 1920s, whereas more than half of all the residential dwellings were built after year 2000.
